Hot Summer Breastfeeding ConsiderationsA recent hot summer day conversation with a nursing mother inspired me to share. If you or someone you know is nursing a baby during the heat of summer the following insight may add a bit of understanding to a change in nursing routine. Babies may seem to be fussy at the breast during hot weather. (I experienced this with my oldest.) It may seem that they aren't nursing for long enough at each feeding. And that they want to nurse more frequently. The physiology behind the change in their nursing pattern is that shorter more frequent feedings will give baby more "watery" fore milk for hydration and less fatty hind milk per feeding. The hind milk is then spread out over more frequent feedings with plenty of fluids for staying hydrated in the heat. This too will change with time and the weather. There is usually a valid reason behind the ongoing changes in your nursing relationship. Observation is one of your key mothering tools. Remember to stay hydrated yourself! Every season has its joys and challenges. Enjoy this lovely summer with your people! ~ Angie For info about or to join our weekly online support group; give me a call: 630-248-3372
